General Atomics Tests Rail Gun, Bullet Velocity 9600km/h

Though the US Navy unveiled the Rail Gun almost two years ago, it’s only now that it is truly gaining some attention. Why the world needs another weapon like this, one wonders. But the Rail Gun can boast a firing of projectiles that travel six times that of a normal bullet.

Although the Rail Gun looks clumsy in size for any type of military warfare, the electric circuit runs on power and parallel rails.

It works by generating a magnetic field, first flowing current through one rail and then another. It’s this electromagnetic force that launches the projectile at an unprecedented speed for a bullet.

A short clip was filmed tracking the projectiles at a rate of 9600 km/h. On impact, a single bullet could rip through an armoured vehicle, tearing off the initial armour plate it penetrated.

General Atomics, the company behind the EMP truck mounter Rail Gun design, tested its capabilities last week.
