These Mutant Cows Show Exactly What's Wrong With The Meat Industry

This creature may look heavily morphed, and even phony, but its bulging muscles are genuine and it was developed this way intentionally.

It's called the Belgian blue bull and farmers have been selectively breeding them for many years, isolating a mutated gene that causes them to grow to such unnatural size.

The mutation is called "double muscling" and takes place when a gene that controls muscle development is missing. The meat market has exploited this mutation to enhance profits, growing their cows bigger and slaying them for more meat.

It comes at an expense for the cow. The lives of these animals are really hard because of their size. Beginning with pregnancies, which are usually very hard (with the animals regularly needing C-sections), the calves are born with a prospective variety of birth defects. Some have enlarged tongues, making it hard-- and even difficult-- for them to nurse. Others might have cardio-respiratory, bone, and joint issues, to name a few ailments.

Typically these health concerns lead to an early death.

But it's for monetary gain. As long as an industrial machine is allowed to rake life for profit we will see animals abused at the whims of humans. It can be stopped, however will you be the one to stop it?

It begins from within. Don't support farms that abuse their animals with selective breeding and antibiotic treatment. Go vegan if you must. Every day you do not give your money to this death trap is a day that you did not support it. Every day is a success.
