A biotech company has been allowed to carry out a groundbreaking project. The purpose of this highly controversial project is to find out if there is a possibility that the dead can be brought back to life with the help of science.
This project is called the ReAnima Project is an joint venture between the USA and India. This project has been officially approved it by an Institutional Review Board from the American National Institutes of Health.
The first stage, will take place at Anupam Hospital in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand India. It has been call ‘First In Human Neuro-Regeneration & Neuro-Reanimation’ and it will be a non-randomized, single group ‘proof of concept’.
They're have been various religious and spiritual accounts of the dead rising, arguably the most famous being Jesus Christ. Although resurrection via a scientific process is highly contested. The project may be able to shed some light on the mystery surrounding death.
Bioquark Incorporated is the biotech company involved the most with this project. They have given the ethical permission to use 20 patients who suffered some form of traumatic brain injury and have been declared clinically brain dead.
The company’s researchers intend to test whether sections of these patient’s central nervous system can be revived. Bioquark claim their main goal is to find cures for various chronic diseases, this also includes complex regeneration.
Brain stem death, is where a person doesn’t have any brain stem function. Meaning they permanently lose the any chance of regaining consciousness and the ability to breathe. These people are classed as being dead as there is no brain stem function .
Brain dead people are technically dead, despite this studies have shown that bodies can still have blood circulation, can balance hormones, digest food, heal wounds, excrete waste, grow, sexually mature, spike a fever, and gestate and even deliver a baby.
Recent studies have also show that some electrical activity and blood flow does in fact continue after brain cell death. This though isn’t enough to allow the whole body to function correctly.
To carry out the project reachers will use a combination of methods. These include injecting the dead brain with stem cells and various peptides and using lasers to stimulate nerves. These techniques have been proven to bring patients out of comas.
The peptides will be administered via a pump into the patient’s spinal cord on a daily basis, the stem cells will be administered on bi-weekly basis. This will all occur over a 6 week period.
All participants of this project are certified dead and can only be kept alive with life support. Brain imaging equipment will be used to monitor their brains for several months to look for any sign that they may be regenerating, the main area of interest is the upper spinal cord. The upper spinal cord is also the lowest parts of the brain stem. This is responsible for controlling breathing and the beating of the heart.
These researchers have stated they believe strongly that the brain stem cells are capable of erasing their previous history and re-start life again, based on surrounding tissue. This process happens most commonly in reptiles. A good example of this is salamanders, these creatures are capable of re-growing entire limbs.
Dr Ira Pastor, Chief Executive Officer of Bioquark, was quoted by the Telegraph. He said “This represents the first trial of its kind and another step towards the eventual reversal of death in our lifetime. We just received approval for our first 20 subjects and we hope to start recruiting patients immediately from this first site – we are working with the hospital now to identify families where there may be a religious or medical barrier to organ donation. To undertake such a complex initiative, we are combining biologic regenerative medicine tools with other existing medical devices typically used for stimulation of the central nervous system, in patients with other severe disorders of consciousness. We hope to see results within the first two to three months.”
